Open Geography Mission Statement

No, that's not me on the right. That is David Wiley, PhD, founder of Lumen Learning, performing a TED Talk on open education in 2010. He and others are some of the leaders in the open education movement, who believe that education not just needs, but MUST be free and open for every democratic society.

I am an Associate Professor of the Geosciences Department at Salt Lake Community College in Utah. I am also the content developer, editor, and administrator of Open Geography Education. All of the content provided is currently being used by myself in the college courses I teach and is also used by several institutions and OER organizations in North America.
What propose an open geography movement, where Geography is not a discipline of solely memorizing rivers, capitals, and countries. It's not a time when you get to color maps in 9th grade. Rather, I believe geography is a way people can experience and connect with life. I propose we be part of a larger movement, where we learn to understand and connect with the physical and cultural environment in a way that shapes our worldview and creates a narrative of discover and "sense of place."

Please join me in this movement to make geography about life on this planet! This is a non-profit website and open for everyone to use - just don't abuse.
